Keys to a Great Tagline

By Claudith Saint-Jean

Having trouble coming up with that perfect tagline to illustrate your brand or product? At Sack Lunch Agency, we’re not just a packaging agency, but a branding and social media agency as well. We’re experts in branding solutions, and we love creating catchy or unique taglines. So, we’re here to help with a quick list of the main ingredients that make up a great tagline, or if you need help with writing a tagline, let us help.

Writing a Tagline that Is Memorable

Pick words that stick out and phrases that are catchy. Sometimes you can even create a cadence and rhythm with commas, rhymes and syllables that are stressed in just the right way. Make sure your audience will remember it when they think of your brand.

Short and Sweet

As with any piece of copywriting, your tagline should be clear, concise, and direct. Use strong, concrete language to get your point across quickly. Make sure that no words are wasted: with a tagline, there’s no room for fluff, so every bit of space needs to be carefully devoted.

Be on Brand

Your tagline should not only reflect the brand’s unique personality, but it should also thoughtfully call back the brand name. This doesn’t need to be a blatant repetition of your brand name, mission statement, etc. It can be a simple suggestion of something related to your brand name that makes the audience quickly associate it with your brand.

Can You Campaign It?

Sounds simple, but you must always ask yourself: how is this tagline going to look on a billboard, in a commercial, even on the product itself? Can it be used in a diverse set of ways to help launch a marketing campaign for your brand and its products? If you’re not sure, keep brainstorming!

Writing a Tagline that is Original

Many a great copywriter has thought of the perfect tagline in that “ah-ha” moment that any creative mind aspires to…only to look it up later and see that it’s already been thought of. Do your research and make sure your tagline won’t be associated with anything other than your brand.

Recall a Key Benefit

It’s always helpful for a tagline to suggest a main function or the primary benefit of the product. For example, a tagline for a diet drink might want to be related to a theme of thin, slender, slimming, etc.

Still can’t think of the perfect tagline? Then give us a call! We’re always happy to whip up some delicious content.
