Delray Beach Historical Tour

Client

The Delray Beach Historical Tour is an entertaining ride in a flashy red golf cart through the downtown area of our home town. They needed a map that would exude all the excitement and character of our adorable little beach town.

Challenge

Typical tour maps are black and white, with classical sketches or similar boring style. In short: Not Delray. From the very start, we knew we needed bright and colorful illustrations that embodied Delray Beach and had high goals for creating a map that would not only be useful along the tour but be memorable enough that customers would keep them and use them on later dates to visit the city.

Digging Deeper

Research

At the start of the project, we were given printouts from the Delray Beach historical archives which detailed about 50 historical landmarks all along Atlantic Ave. To bring the best out of the map, our designer Hampton Freeman, who is new to our city, spent an entire weekend day biking the entire route, seeing sights, meeting people, and getting to know what sets Delray Beach apart from other places. We chose the biggest highlights of new and old landmarks and set to creating a visual style all it’s own.

Translation

Creating a consistent visual identity throughout all the illustrations was key to creating a beautiful map.  A simple but playful style was generated first for the buildings which would then be translated over to all the other drawings.

The Details

It was very important for us to create a map that would astound. We channeled our inner Where’s Waldo and created dozens of custom illustrations to fill every inch of the map.  It is our hope that every time you pick up the map, you’ll find a small hidden illustration that will make you smile.

02. Conceptualize

No No Need to Paint in the Lines

All drawings were hand drawn, though we tried to incorporate as much of the real world as possible.  The car shown is the actual Tour’s cart, the buildings in the background actual landmarks, even the bust is a caricature of Henry Flagler who is very important to the historical tour.

03. Implement

Accuracy

This map was created to be as accurate as possible using google maps as an underlay and unfolds to an extra wide 8.5×22” to make it easy to read.

We designed a rack card to be placed in information centers to advertise the tour.  The custom illustrations for the rack card were created to make it clear this was a historical tour as opposed to the art on the map which was more general Delray Beach culture.
